Presbyterians

Ewing – Covenant Presbyterian Church is part of the The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), or PC(USA), which is a mainline Protestant Christian denomination in the United States. Part of the Reformed tradition, it is the largest Presbyterian denomination in the U.S., followed by the Presbyterian Church in America. The PC(USA) was established by the 1983 merger of the former Presbyterian Church in the United States (whose churches were located in the Southern and border states) with the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, whose congregations could be found in every state.  The reunited denomination is the most visible and influential Presbyterian denomination in North America.

A unique characteristic of the Presbyterian Church is that we are a connectional church where ruling elders and teaching elders (ministers) join together in equal partnership to guide the ministry and mission of the church at the regional (“Presbytery”) and national  (“General Assembly”) levels.

The Presbyterian denomination has its roots in the Reformed theology teachings of John Calvin, John Knox and others in the 17th and 18th centuries. Presbyterians were present and active in the American colonies, especially in central New Jersey, and were strong supporters of the patriot cause in the American Revolution. Presbyterians were also major players in and contributors to the formation of the governance of our nation. Their commitment to education was responsible for the creation of many institutions of higher learning – institutions which still exist to this day, although often under different names.
