In the fall of 2016, Gateway/Head Start opened its doors 
on the Ewing campus of Ewing Presbyterian Church and welcomed 52 pre-school aged children to its program. Head Start is a federal program that promotes a school readiness program for children from birth through age 5 from low-income families by enhancing their cognitive, social, and emotional development. The Ewing Head Start serves preschool-aged children and their families, and offers a variety of programs modeled to the needs of the community they are serving.
The programs provide a learning environment that supports children’s growth in language and literacy, cognitive and general knowledge, physical development and health, and social and emotional development. The Head Start program provides comprehensive services to enrolled children and their families, which include health, nutrition, social, and other services determined to be necessary by family needs assessments, in addition to education and cognitive development cervices. Services are designed to be responsive to each child and family’s ethnic, cultural, and linguistic heritage.
Head Start emphasizes the role of parents as their child’s first and most important teacher. Their programs build relationships with families that support: family well-being and positive parent-child relationships; families as learners and lifelong educators; family engagement in transitions; family connections to peers and community; and families as advocates and leaders.
Breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack is provided.
