The pandemic has caused many changes, and one is having to gather online or “virtually” for church services. But we are resilient! Currently, all of our services and meetings are being held online, through the Zoom platform. The good news is that this not only allows us to continue to worship, but even after we are back together again in person, it will enable us to offer virtual worship attendance to those who are homebound, out of town, or unable to join us in person for whatever reason.
“Zoom” is a video-telephone conferencing software application (“app”) which joins participants via audio and video into one virtual meeting space. The convener issues a common link by which invitees can join in to see and listen to the speaker. The speaker can also invite them to participate, either by audio/telephone, or with added video.
In our situation, the church issues an invitation link, and when that link is opened on a smartphone or other internet-enabled device, we see and hear the worship service, as if it is a live TV program. One can instead call in to the meeting by (audio only) telephone using a special conference call telephone number which we provide. At the end of the service when we are all invited to participate instead of watching/listening, we can do so via voice and/or video if we choose – talking and waving and smiling to all who are also participating, in a time of virtual fellowship. (Unfortunately, Zoom has not figured out how to distribute snacks and coffee to all fellowship participants – yet! We are sure some Presbyterian somewhere will develop this functionality soon!)
